The
Department of English Language Teaching, which first functioned as part of
the Department of English Language and Humanities, was officially founded=
in
1994 as an independent department, and served under the Faculty of Arts a=
nd
Sciences until 1998. In 1998, it played an important role in founding the
Faculty of Education as the most established department of the new facult=
y.
The ma=
in
goal of the Department of English Language Teaching is to train English
teachers who are equipped with the knowledge and the skills that contempo=
rary
foreign language education requires, and as those who are trained for
continuous self-improvement.
The Department of English Language Teaching provides not only a 4-year
undergraduate program but also an MA and a Ph.D. program. All these progr=
ams
have been approved by the Higher Education Council of the Republic of Tur=
key.
The graduate programs mainly focus on research on English Language Teachi=
ng
and Applied Linguistics.
Our faculty at the moment consists of twelve distinguished scholars who h=
ave
studied and taught in TRNC, Turkey and other countries. As of 2002-2003
academic year, 230 undergraduate and 42 graduate students are enrolled in=
our
department.
Our senior students are given the opportunity to do their practice teachi=
ng
under the supervision of their professors at the public high schools as w=
ell
as the schools affiliated with our university such as the School of Forei=
gn
Languages and Eastern Mediterranean College. Most of our alumni have been
working at the schools in TRNC, Turkey and other countries. Some of our
alumni hold other positions which require an advanced level of English
proficiency.
Those candidates from the Republic of Turkey (with TC citizenship) who wo=
uld
like to enroll in our department must take the exam(s) administered by OS=
YM
(the nation-wide university entrance exam(s) in Turkey), and either be pl=
aced
by OSYM, or achieve the minimum grade OSYM requires for the admission to a

TRNC citizens must take the entrance exam administered by Eastern
Mediterranean University every year. Since the medium of instruction at t=
he
university is English, the candidates must also prove proficiency in the
English language. The candidates take the English Proficiency Test
administered by the School of Foreign Languages at EMU. Those who prove t=
heir
competence in English with other standard international tests such as TOE=
FL
and IELTS will be exempted from the English Proficiency Test.<=
